Q: How do intersection safety cameras work?
A:
First rear image: The “A” shot is captured from the rear approach showing: the scene of the violation including the back of the violating vehicle in front of the violation line; one or more visible red light signals; and a clear image of the license plate of the offending vehicle, all from the single, base image.
Second rear image: The “B” shot is also captured from the rear approach showing: the scene of the violation including the back of the violating vehicle after the rear axle has crossed the stop line and the vehicle has illegally entered the intersection; one or more visible red light signals; and a clear image of the license plate of the offending vehicle, all from the single, base image.
License plate crop: For the court and police department this is the most significant technology innovation in photo enforcement. The Axsis™ Violation Processing System will create a magnified “crop” of the license plate from one of the images for easy viewing. The cropped license plate close-up is not a separate image, but rather a close-up view of the original violation image. This image can be taken from either of the two images captured.

Q: Why is one ATS camera better than multiple others?
A: ATS uses the highest digital color resolution cameras in the industry, giving it a huge advantage over competitors.
- The ATS single camera solution captures multiple violations simultaneously taking as many as five images per second. Other single and multi-camera systems can only capture one violation at a time.
- Only ATS uses a single camera, up to 16 megapixels, capable of producing the clearest images over several lanes of traffic. Others claim they have the “equivalent” output as ATS. But pixels cannot be added together to produce equivalent or better results so their claims are misleading at best.
- All violation evidence is extracted from one image set, without the use of a secondary camera to capture the license plate. Multi-cams have a history of license plate mismatches and camera sync issues resulting in overturned violations and program terminations in several states.
- The flexibility of ATS single-camera placement (farther back and higher on the pole) provides a better field of view and the ability to capture violators over the top of tall vehicles like buses or trucks.
- One camera covering all lanes of traffic means less roadway equipment and fewer dependent connections, resulting in a lower probability of error.
